Hello Silicon Valley 2007 Code Campers!

I bet you are surprised to hear from me with likely 8 months before we begin promoting the 2008 Silicon Valley Code Camp. Well, there are reasons. First, and most important, I want to get a big jump on planning for the 2008 event. From the past two code camps we did, one thing I am sure of is we have to start planning earlier. Specifically in the area of getting sponsors. Both 2006 and 2007 had some sponsors, but both times, the sponsors came too late to actually plan events in earnest. For example, in 2007 we did not have a lunch sponsor in time to even order lunch. Thankfully, Microsoft stepped up and bought us lunch both days. And for the Barbeque? Again, we did not have enough money so we had to cancel it. The other area is getting more help in planning the event. Some of the feedback we got was that there was not enough flexibility on the web site scheduling. It would be great to start improving the site now, rather than wait until the last minute.

So, here is the call to action. First, if you have not filled out your Code Camp Survey and indicated you want to volunteer for the 08 event, please go back to the web and make sure you indicate you want to volunteer and for what. The next step is I will call a meeting (likely at Foothill College) for some weekday evening and we can all get together and form action committees. I will email everyone who has marked that they are interested in volunteering for something. Because of our late sponsorship contributions, we have some money to spend. I am thinking things like nice speaker shirts would be nice (and of course goodies for our planning get togethers at Foothill College).

PS: Based on our success at Foothill College, CACE Technologies has created an event called SHARKFEST which will run March31st to April 2nd at Foothill. It will host the First Annual Wireshark (aka Ethereal) Developer and User Event. It is not a free event, but they tell me if you say you heard about it at SV Code Camp you will get a discount. Our Second Code Camp in Silicon Valley was a huge success. With over 75 presentations and many hundreds of attendees, we could not hope for better. Everyone we talked to over the weekend made it clear they want the event to happen again. We would like to acknowledge and thank our host (Foothill College), our contributors (listed below) and our volunteers because without them this great event would not be possible.

On that note, we have started the planning for Silicon Valley Code Camp 2008. Foothill College has graciously invited us back and our current plans are to do it again around the same time next year.

A great first day for code camp. over 400 people attended with many packed classes. Great People, great food, and great weather. Hard to make it any better.

Last Minute Session Schedule Changes

We’ve had a last-minute change in the 9:45am Saturday slot and have added a session entitled, “Accelerate Rich-Media Development with Nirvanix Web Services”. Highlights:

Accelerate time-to-market in building rich-media applications on the web.
Expedite and simplify development of Facebook, photo-sharing, digital locker, and other Web 2.0 applications.

Free Parking in Lot 4

We currently have almost 800 people registered, and 78 code packed sessions scheduled. We published the schedule earlier this week and though we are trying not to change things, it's hard to resist when guys like Douglas Crockford writes in and says he's like to continue on for a second session because there is so much goodness to spread around, One session will just not suffice. Also, Matt Mullenweb (Founder of Wordpress) had to move his session from Saturday to Sunday so you won't want to miss that one. We've made other changes as well. Come checkout the Website! We have 75 Sessions covering all kinds of very cool technologies. Foothill College has generously given us the use of many class rooms this weekend. Sessions covering .Net, Java, Ruby, Python, Security, Web Services, Architecture are just a few of the many topics covered.

Please log in to your account so that you can select classes you are planning on attending. Please do this. It will help us allocate and prepare classrooms better for everyone. You will only be able to select one session for any give time slot. You can view your selections on the Sessions Overview page.

Also, if you check the "Hide Cloud" box on the Sessions Detail Page, you will see a picture of the class rooms assigned to each session.

Ultima Hosting Upgrades us to 512MB VPS on 8 Way Processor!

This is the second year that Ultima Hosting has generously donated a VPS for us to use for Code Camp. I'm expecting a lot of traffic tomorrow when we release the schedule as people check out class rooms and sign up for sessions they will be interested in. I had just asked for a little memory and somehow, ended up on a much faster processor. Not sure if you noticed, but sorting sessions is almost 3 times faster if you've got a good internet connection. Of course the upgrade was not without any issues. It seems that the new VPS is running under win2003-64 and the previous vps was win2003-32. As usual though, Ultima helped get all the issues straightened out with no down time.

We would like to make this “User-generated code camp”. Tell us what you would like to learn in this code camp and we will get the right speakers for you.

For example, Tell us what you would like to learn about Amazon Web Services in this code camp. If there are more people asking for similar requests, then we can request AWS to cover that topic in more detail and in more depth. This is YOUR code camp and Your chance to speak up. We came up with a few ideas for AWS:

· Amazon S3 and .NET

· Amazon FPS in Ruby/PHP

· Amazon FPS and Marketplace in .NET

· Building processing pipelines using Amazon EC2/Amazon S3 and Amazon SQS in Ruby on Rails

We've just gotten our Wiki setup and installed for use by Code Camp Attendees and Presenters. On our Home Page (http://www.siliconvalley-codecamp.com) we now have Wiki Pages for: Sponsors; Items to Sponsor; Volunteers; User Communities; Challenges and Travel. The password to edit these pages is svcc and we are hoping to gets lots of community input using these Wiki Pages.

So far we have 44 Session covering topics including .Net, Java, Python, Open Source, Ajax, Gaming, Web Architecture, Mashups among others. We have a new Cloud Control on our Sessions Display that lets you navigate to sessions by category. The more sessions having the category, the larger the Font. For Example, Java has 8 sessions, Web development has 7, and Unit Testing has 6.

Mark Your Calendars! We have a Date. October 27th and 28th

It is time to spread the word again. We have launched our second annual Silicon Valley Code Camp to be held once again at Foothill Community College in Los Altos on October 27th and October 28th. As always, a full weekend of fun and learning.

Let this first posting be a call for speakers. Come bring your favorite topic and present! Anything that involves code is acceptable. We welcome all software technologies. .Net, Java, Javascript, Python, Ruby, you name it.

Last year was a tremendous success. We had over 55 sessions and oodles of attendees. The campus worked out great and everyone had loads of fun. Let's make this year even better.
